Legislative Update: Republicans aim to cut health and human services

Thursday, March 23, 2017

Dear Neighbors,

On Monday, the Republican majority in the House released their budget targets and there are a couple alarming components of it, most notably the massive cuts to health and human services.

Republicans are proposing $600 million in cuts to the health and human services budget. A little over a week after they stood in the Capitol promising new investments in the industry and better pay, their budget shows where their priorities actually lie.

In early March, they handed $400 million to insurance companies with no guarantee of lower premiums or that the companies would even stay in the market.

And now toward the end of March, they announce their intentions to cut $600 million from the health and human services budget.

The Republican budget also underfunds education and includes a tax giveaway for owners of corporations via the property tax bill.

Advocacy for Children Day

A couple weeks ago, I had the opportunity to read to a group of children gathered in the Capitol Rotunda for Advocacy for Children Day; this picture was snapped mid-story.

As a state representative, I’ve had my picture taken with visiting groups more times than I can remember. This one stood out to me since the first time I saw it and is one of the most meaningful I’ve been in during my time at the Capitol so I wanted to share it with all of you.

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me at the Capitol.

Sincerely,

Jack Considine

State Representative
