Legislative Update - March 23rd, 2017

Thursday, March 23, 2017

Neighbors and Friends,

Just a quick reminder, I am having a legislative town hall with Sen. Nick Frentz to discuss the 2017 legislative session. The meeting is free and open to the public. I hope to see you there.

Nicollet Town Hall

9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

Nicollet City Hall, Council Chambers

Legislative action has ramped up again this week as we near our last committee deadline approaching on March 31. Our days are filled with constituent group visits, daytime and evening committee hearings and floor sessions. Here is an update from the Capitol:

House Budget Targets Released

House Republicans announced their budget targets this week; the final piece needed for committees to craft the budget for the next two years. Any budget decisions should put Minnesotans first and prepare for uncertainty at the federal level. Unfortunately, the Republican budget makes deep cuts to health and human services, underfunds education, and puts our hard earned budget stability at risk to due to overly aggressive tax cuts.

We’re still waiting for details in most budget areas, and I’ll keep advocating for common sense and responsible proposals that invest in the areas that have made Minnesota’s economy strong, like education.

When I consider our state budget I start by prioritizing school funding and key human services functions that take care of our most vulnerable. While details are still emerging I am disappointed there no new constitutionally dedicated funding for roads and bridges.

I am also concerned that House Republicans are not taking staffing levels at the Minnesota Security Hospital seriously.

Don’t hesitate to contact me with concerns or questions.

Sincerely,

Clark Johnson
