Tomorrow: For-Profit Prison Hearings at the Capitol

Monday, March 20, 2017

Dear Neighbors,

I wanted to let you know that tomorrow at 10:15 AM, members of the House Public Safety and Security Policy and Finance Committee will be hearing a bill (HF 1510) to allow Minnesota to conduct business with private prison corporations. The meeting will be in Room 10 of the State Office Building (100 Rev Dr Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, St. Paul, MN 55155)

Specifically, this bill would require the state of Minnesota to buy or lease the private prison facility owned by Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) in Appleton, MN. You can find more details about the hearing here.

I feel strongly that private prisons are an inappropriate and inhumane use of our tax dollars. They are used to reward corporate greed and encourage the imprisonment of our fellow citizens, instead of helping them reform their lives and start anew. It’s not right, and I don’t think Minnesota should be giving any money to a corporation with such a bad track record like CCA (now rebranded as “CoreCivic”).

If you feel like I do, I hope you’ll take time to make your voice heard. You can find contact information of members of the committee here.

Sincerely,

Rena Moran

State Representative
