TOMORROW: For-Profit Prisons Hearing

Monday, March 20, 2017

Dear Neighbors,

Tomorrow at 10:15 AM, members of the House Public Safety and Security Policy and Finance Committee will be hearing a bill (HF 1510) to allow Minnesota to conduct business with for-profit prison corporations like Corrections Corporation of America (recently rebranded to “CoreCivic”). The meeting will be in Room 10 of the State Office Building (100 Rev Dr Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, St. Paul, MN 55155). You can find more details about the hearing here.

The bill would require Minnesota to buy or lease the for-profit prison facility owned by Corrections Corporation of America in Appleton, MN.

We know that for-profit prisons are a vehicle for corporate greed that use our tax dollars to reward the punishment of low-income Americans of color. Instead of incentivizing corporations to throw our fellow citizens in jail, we should be looking at ways to reform and use our tax dollars on proven methods that help people reform their lives.

If you feel like I do, I hope you’ll take time to make your voice heard. You’ll find contact information of members of the committee here.

Sincerely,

Ilhan Omar

State Representative
