Sympathies to the Sandbergs

Wednesday, October 21, 2015

Dear Neighbor,

With great sadness, I relay the following information concerning one of Aitkin County’s finest.

Investigator Steven Martin Sandberg, age 60 of Aitkin died Sunday, Oct. 18, 2015 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the Aitkin High School. Burial will be in the Bennettville Cemetery.

Visitation will be 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday with a Masonic Service at 7 p.m., all at the Aitkin United Methodist Church. Arrangements are with the Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home.

Steven Sandberg was shot and killed while guarding a prisoner at the St. Cloud Hospital. The prisoner was in custody in connection with a domestic assault and attacked Investigator Sandberg in the hospital room. The man then fatally shot Investigator Sandberg with his own service weapon.

Investigator Sandberg had served with Aitkin County Sheriff's Office for 24 years. He was a 1976 graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. This is another example of the selfless sacrifice our men and women in law enforcement make on behalf of keeping us safe.

Investigator Sandberg leaves behind a wife and daughter, who is in college. My wife, Linda, and I extend our deepest sympathy to Investigator Sandberg’s family. Please include them in your prayers as they grieve the loss of a husband and father.

Sincerely,

Dale
