Capitol Update from Rep. Dan Fabian

Monday, January 11, 2016

Dear Neighbors,

Folks have been contacting me over the past several months, concerned about their upcoming travel plans and our state's non-compliance with federal REAL ID requirements. On Friday, we received an update from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and I wanted to share that news to clear up confusion and ease any concerns you may have.

DHS informed our state that the earliest that REAL ID compliant driver's licenses would be required to board a domestic flight is January 22, 2018, with possible extensions for states after that date. Full compliance for air travel will start on October 1, 2020.

That means that your Minnesota-issued driver's license will continue to be an acceptable form of identification to board a domestic commercial flight for at least the next two years. It also means that the legislature will have plenty of time to implement necessary changes to state law when we reconvene for the regular legislative session in March.

If you have any additional questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me, but rest assured that for folks with upcoming travel plans, you can continue to use your Minnesota driver's license to board an airplane.
