Quick update on REAL ID

Friday, January 8, 2016

Dear Neighbors,

I travel for my work every month and have been deeply concerned about Minnesotans' ability to travel as I know you have. I'm pleased to send along some good news to you regarding the Real ID issue you have been hearing about.

This afternoon, the Department of Homeland Security announced that REAL ID enforcement for boarding an airplane would not happen until January 22, 2018 at the very earliest. If there are states still not in full compliance, they can apply for an extension until October 2020. This means that Minnesotans do not have to worry about altered travel plans any time in the near future.

Our state has two years to earn an extension and over four years to become fully REAL ID compliant. This is still an important issue in St. Paul, and one we will look to address during the regular legislative session which starts in March.

Again, there’s no need to worry about flying with your current ID. If you still have questions, please contact my office.

Have a great weekend,

Jim
