REAL ID Update from Rep. Mark Uglem 1-8-2016

Friday, January 8, 2016

Dear friends,

Earlier today Minnesota was given a time line by the Department of Homeland Security for REAL ID enforcement. We've been told that the earliest that REAL ID-compliant licenses would be required to fly domestically is January 22nd, 2018. States may be granted extensions after this date, but everyone wanting to flying within the U.S. will need to have a REAL ID-compliant license or a different form of acceptable identification starting October 1, 2020.

Bottom line, you don't need to worry about REAL ID impacting your travel plans for at least another two years. This is really good news, and means the legislature has plenty of time to work toward complying with REAL ID during the upcoming regular session, which will begin on March 8th.

Take care,

Mark
