Dear Friends and Neighbors,
I hope you’re bracing for the forecasted cold spell this weekend. Let’s hope the Vikings can stay warm enough to win the playoff game on Sunday! We’ve seen a flurry of activity at our capitol this week. One of the most important topics is the REAL ID compliance.
REAL ID Update
Yesterday, I joined the REAL ID Working Group to discuss a legislative path toward REAL ID compliance. REAL ID is a Federal law that now requires every state to have tougher security standards in place for driver’s licenses.
Just this afternoon, the Department of Homeland Security announced they would not start enforcing REAL ID compliance until January 22, 2018 at the earliest. If states are still not fully compliant, an extension can be granted until October 1, 2020 when REAL ID will be mandatory for domestic air travel.
The next legislative session begins March 8 providing ample time to start down the road to compliance. I’m looking forward to working on the front lines at the legislature to find the proper balance between federal conformity and the appropriate concerns about data privacy or ceding control of Minnesota driver’s licenses to the federal government.
Just like you, I too travel for business and personal enjoyment. And just like you, I need to know that my business plans and my family’s travel plans won’t be disrupted. I believe this two-year window allows us to find a legislative solution to this issue that won’t impact family or business travel.

Legislative Anniversary
