RELEASE: Rep. Fue Lee Statement on Second Executive Order Attacking Immigrant Communities

Tuesday, March 7, 2017

SAINT PAUL, MN – Yesterday, Donald Trump signed an Executive Order Protecting The Nation From Foreign Terrorist Entry Into The United States, a second attempt to ban Muslims refugees from six nations (Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen), and blocking refugees from all nations for 120 days.

State Rep. Fue Lee (DFL – Minneapolis) issued the following statement denouncing President Trump’s executive actions:

“The President's new Executive Order is not new. At it's core, it is doubling down on his old campaign promise of banning Muslims from the United States of America, which courts have unanimously blocked. As we have already experienced with his initial ban, the policy implications were sweeping, dangerous and completely un-American. One thing is clear, the Trump administration and their supporters are on the offensive in striking anxiety and fear across immigrant and refugee communities across this country. The reality of ‘knocks at the door’ by federal law enforcement officials to round up people is something we could only have imagined in recent history. And yet, the danger exists right here in our own community.

“We must all stand up and stand strong against this unjust policy. We must be unequivocal in our fight and our protection of our neighbors, our families, our elders and our children in all our communities who are being subjected to this new order.”

“Even though I am a Minnesota State Representative, I am also a refugee, and a part of a larger community of immigrants in our city, state, and region. I am equally vulnerable to the direct policy implications wherever I may travel. I came to this country as a refugee with my family, fleeing the life threatening dangers of war in Southeast Asia. I know intimately the fear and anxieties of Minnesotans from refugee and immigrant backgrounds. I call upon the good people of Minnesota from all communities, all faiths, to reject these un-American policies from the White House. This does not represent the America that opened its arms to my family and me as political refugees. I stand with refugees, immigrants, and in these dark hours, with our Muslim brothers and sisters. I ask you to stand with me.”
