Statement on Passage of Preemption Legislation

Friday, March 3, 2017

SAINT PAUL, MN – Tonight, after a lengthy floor debate, the Minnesota House of Representatives passed House File 600, a preemption bill that would prevent any local jurisdiction from passing a higher minimum wage, paid sick leave, or paid family leave policy. State Rep. Peggy Flanagan (DFL-St. Louis Park) issued the following statement:

“Over 150,000 workers in the metro area—disproportionately women and people of color—have planned their lives and their families’ lives around the fact that they will soon have access to earned sick leave. And for every single one of them, that sense of economic security is about to be ripped out from underneath them,” said Flanagan. “Rather than creating a ceiling on wages and workplace conditions statewide, we should be focused on raising the floor."

HF 600 passed the Minnesota House of Representatives 76-53, mostly along party lines.
