RELEASE: Rep. Schultz to participate in redistricting panel at Hamline Saturday

Tuesday, February 28, 2017

ST. PAUL – On Saturday, a panel discussion on redistricting will take place at Hamline University sponsored by Common Cause Minnesota. Titled “Democracy, Redistricting, and the Census,” the discussion will preview the 2022 legislative and congressional reapportionment and legislation introduced affecting the process.

One of the panelists, Rep. Jennifer Schultz (DFL – Duluth) is the author of HF 246 which would establish principles for redistricting and create a commission of retired judges to draw the boundaries.

“While we are still a few years away from this process, it’s important to lay the groundwork for it now, and that’s why it’s good we’re having these discussions,” Rep. Schultz said. “For redistricting to truly be fair for all Minnesotans, the politics should be taken out of it, and it should be an open and transparent process with public input. Legislators should not be allowed to select their voters.”

Other panelists include Sen. Mary Kiffmeyer (R – Big Lake), chair of the Senate State Government and Elections Committee, Minnesota State Demographer Susan Brower, and Hamline University political science professor David Schultz. Tom Horner, the 2010 Independence Party gubernatorial nominee, will moderate the discussion.

The discussion is free and open to the public. Free parking is available in the lot next to the building.
