Poppe votes in favor of Sunday sales

St. Paul, Minn. – Following the passage of a bill allowing Sunday liquor sales, Rep. Jeanne Poppe, DFL-Austin, released the following statement:

“This is the first year we have had a stand-alone bill on Sunday liquor sales. In past sessions, when it was offered as an amendment to the omnibus liquor bill, I have always voted against this provision. However, this year I made the decision to support Sunday sales. Certainly the public input has been more aggressive than in years past and the time to make the change seems right. In my estimation, there have been improvements made to the bill including limiting Sunday sales to the hours of 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and not permitting alcohol deliveries to off-sale stores on Sundays.

Because of these conditions, I voted ‘yes’ and am glad an issue that has been a recurring theme during session for years has been resolved in such a bipartisan manner. Both sides of the aisle contributed to getting the legislation passed and we can now turn our focus to other bills important to Minnesotans. This is also a great opportunity to highlight the value of contacting local lawmakers with comments and concerns about legislation coming before us; it makes a difference.”
