Liebling applauds long overdue change on Sunday sales

Monday, February 20, 2017

SAINT PAUL, MN—Today, the Minnesota House passed a bill that would end the prohibition on Sunday liquor sales. The bill allows for limited hours of liquor sales between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. and prohibits liquor deliveries.

Rep. Tina Liebling (DFL-Rochester) who, in 2013, sponsored an amendment to repeal the ban, released the following statement:

"Many responsible consumers want the opportunity to stop at the liquor store on Sunday, which is the main shopping day for many people.  If store owners wish to be open on the days their customers want to shop, government should not stand in the way.

This is not a top-priority issue, but the change has been a long time coming.  In 2013, my amendment was defeated on a vote of 106-21.  I’m glad to see that the House has now come around and I hope the Senate will pass it as well.”

Rep. Liebling is the DFL-Health Care Lead on the Health and Human Services Reform Committee. Rep. Liebling can be contacted by email at rep.tina.liebling@house.mn or phone at 651-296-0573.
