Greetings to you from the Capitol! Here are some updates from a busy week!
Town Hall Thank You!
I appreciated hearing directly from everyone who attended the town halls I hosted last weekend with Rep. Loeffler and Sen. Dziedzic. The turnouts for Coffee and Kulan with Ilhan have also been excellent. A few photos from these events below.
A Day Without Immigrants
I was inspired by the thousands of marchers who came to the Capitol yesterday to make a strong statement that our community is strong because of the diversity and perspectives that our vibrant immigrant communities bring. Now is the time to make our voices heard and rise to show how the richness of our communities cannot by silenced by President Trump and racist policy-makers here and throughout the country.
Meeting with Young Physicians
I welcomed a fantastic group of young physicians to the Capitol on Wednesday from the University of Minnesota. Their energy for helping others is contagious!
Regent Selection on February 22nd
Next Wednesday at 7:00 p.m., the House and Senate will vote in a joint session on the selection of Regents for the University of Minnesota. There were 36 applications submitted for 4 regent seats, 17 were interviewed and 12 names were sent on to the full Legislature. You can find more information about the Regent selection process here.
I know many of the University of Minnesota students in our district have concerns about our Regent selection process. Just because candidates were suggested does not mean those are the candidates we have to vote for. If you have thoughts on the candidates, I’d like to hear from you!
Special Guest
This week I hosted a special guest at the Capitol. Jenna Bush Hager, the daughter of former President George W. Bush, visited me to do an interview which will air later this year to discuss serving our district as a young person, woman, mother, and the first Somali American in a state legislature. It was a lovely visit, and I look forward to when her interview will air.
