Governor Dayton recently released his biennial budget proposal. His plan echoes the priorities stated in his State of the State Address, ensuring Minnesota’s economy works for all Minnesotans. The Governor outlined a broad vision for improving Minnesotans’ lives. Much of that vision is related to education and sustainable budgeting for long-term solutions.
Gov. Dayton and I are committed to investing in all levels of education, from early childhood all the way through college. The Governor is calling for $75 million to expand voluntary pre-kindergarten for all of Minnesota’s children. He has also proposed a 2% increase in education funding this year and the next, which has had past bipartisan support from the Minnesota Legislature. This initiative would be an encouraging step forward to support the success of our students.
Minnesota is one of the most expensive states for families who seek child care. Another key proposal of the Governor’s budget plan, of which I am a chief bill author, is to deliver $85 million to Minnesota’s Child Care Assistance Program. This would provide financial assistance to help low-income and middle-class families pay for high quality child care. If we invest in this program, we would be making a profound difference for parents who are pursing work or school.
He also proposed a public option to increase competition and drive down health insurance costs. Gov. Dayton called for everyone to join together in the shared goal of cleaning up our precious lakes and streams. Finally, he also asked that the legislature work with him to come to a long-term solution to the $6 billion funding shortfall we have in our transportation budget over the next 10 years. We must work together to build a multi-modal transportation system that helps our state and all Minnesotans prosper.
Governor Dayton’s vision is one of continued positive growth for all Minnesotans. I continue to wish him good health and look forward to working with him so everyone in our community and state has the opportunity to succeed.
