RELEASE: Rep. Schultz concerned about health insurance premium agreement

Thursday, January 26, 2017

St. Paul, Minn. – Today, the Minnesota House of Representatives passed a bill providing the health insurance premium relief for Minnesotans. The measure also radically changes the health insurance system in Minnesota by allowing for-profit insurers to operate in the state.

State Rep. Jennifer Schultz (DFL – Duluth) released the following statement:

“I am very disappointed with this bill, and the politics that prevented immediate premium relief to make the lives of Minnesota families better.

“There is no evidence that allowing for-profit HMOs to operate in Minnesota will stabilize the insurance market. Instead of focusing on immediate premium relief, Republicans insisted on ‘reforms’ to benefit corporations. They have insisted on eliminating coverage for essential health benefits – like cancer care. They delayed premium relief for four months, putting the lives and finances of Minnesotans at risk. Now, families only have a few days left to sign up for coverage. This doesn’t make the lives of Minnesotans better. This bill is simply giving insurance companies an opportunity to make large profits.”
