Maye Quade Applauds Governor Dayton’s Education and Job Creation Budget

Tuesday, January 24, 2017

ST. PAUL—Governor Dayton returned to work today and presented his proposed state budget which includes a $371 million over two years for public education and reinstating several job creation programs including the Department of Employment and Economic Development’s (DEED) Job Creation Fund and Minnesota Investment Fund which have helped businesses expand in Apple Valley.

“Governor Dayton’s budget leads to a bright vision for Minnesota and his commitment to cradle to college education will make Minnesota stronger,” said Rep. Maye Quade (DFL-Apple Valley). “To truly close the achievement gap, we need to stop it before it starts. For Minnesota to succeed, we have to prepare every child with the education, skills, and training to compete in a 21st century economy.”

Governor Dayton also highlighted the need to make smart investments to build a stronger Minnesota and wants to bring back both DEED’s Job Creation Fund and the Minnesota Investment Fund. Unfortunately both programs were eliminated after strong opposition by the House Majority in 2015, but Governor Dayton is looking to bring the programs back.

Abdallah Candies will open its new facility in Apple Valley January 26th after receiving a $170,000 grant from the Job Creation Fund.

“The Job Creation Fund and Minnesota Investment Fund were catalysts for millions of dollars of private investment that helped Abdallah Candies and Uponor expand in Apple Valley creating hundreds of new jobs. Abdallah Candies offers classic confections that are second-to-none and Uponor has their North American headquarters right in our backyard. I am proud to have them both and their hundreds of employees right here in our community,” said Rep. Maye Quade.

Uponor received $840,000 from the Job Creation Fund and $500,000 from the Minnesota Investment Fund as part of an expansion of its manufacturing facilities in Apple Valley. Uponor manufactures plumbing, heating and cooling systems and is the biggest employer in Apple Valley.

“Apple Valley and Lakeville were very fortunate that these programs existed when Uponor and Abdallah Candies were looking to expand. Unfortunately, local businesses around Minnesota are missing the opportunity to benefit from these job creation programs because they were eliminated. Eliminating these programs is holding back job creation in the areas where Minnesotans need it most. I am going work with anyone who will work with me to help restore the Job Creation Fund and the Minnesota Investment program so we can expand local businesses to build a better Minnesota,” said Rep. Maye Quade.
