Legislative Update- January 5, 2017

Thursday, January 5, 2017

Dear Neighbor,

Tuesday, January 3rd marked the first day of the 2017 Legislative Session in St. Paul.  Thank you for the honor of representing our community at the State Capitol. I am ready to prioritize addressing the challenges our state faces and will continue to work hard on a bipartisan level; first and foremost, by providing urgent relief to families in our district and statewide facing high health insurance premiums.

Governor Dayton held a press conference on Tuesday calling for immediate action by the end of this week.  His plan, which was originally announced approximately two months ago, would reduce these premiums by 25 percent for those effected within the individual market.  Although a compromise could not be reached to hold a special session, all legislative leaders including the Speaker and Governor have publicly agreed this should be the first item the Legislature tackles.  I am ready, and have been, to vote on and pass this bill so the Governor can sign it and the relief process can begin.

House Committees began meeting this week.  This year, the Legislature is tasked with crafting a budget for the biennium, so we can anticipate weeks of committee hearings with budget requests from various groups and state agencies.

Please continue to keep me updated on your views, questions or concerns.  I appreciate your input.

Sincerely,

Paul
