RELEASE: House DFL Iron Range Delegation Applauds Mining Decision

Monday, January 9, 2017

St. Paul, Minn. – Today, the U.S. Forest Service issued its Final Record of Decision approving a land exchange which will allow Polymet to access the land for its proposed NorthMet copper-nickel mine. Polymet already controls the mineral rights to the ore beneath this body of land. Under the swap, Polymet will receive access to approximately 6,650 acres of land at the proposed mining location from the Forest Service in exchange for 6,690 acres on four parcels Polymet owns elsewhere.

State Reps. Jason Metsa (DFL – Virginia), Rob Ecklund (DFL – International Falls) and Julie Sandstede (DFL – Hibbing) issued the following statement:

“We are pleased to see this project take another important step forward. We can’t think of another project that has been under more scientific review than this one. As always, we will keep a watchful eye to ensure science dictates the path forward for the NorthMet project.”
