RELEASE: State Rep. Erik Simonson Requests Immediate Action on Rate Increases

Wednesday, November 30, 2016

ST. PAUL, MN – Today, State Representative Erik Simonson (DFL – Duluth) sent a letter requesting immediate action to address rate increases in the individual health insurance market. The letter was sent to Governor Mark Dayton and State House Speaker Kurt Daudt. The official letter is attached, with text below:

Governor Dayton and Speaker Daudt,

I feel the need to reach out personally on behalf of my constituents whom are incredibly frustrated with the forthcoming costs associated with the individual market in 2017. I am certain you are well aware, and are hearing the very same concerns that I am from many Minnesotans.

My most recent complaint was from a Duluth retired couple, who will make just enough on their pension to not qualify for federal assistance. Their 2017 premiums will go up to $1500 a month for a policy with a $13,000 family deductible. This is unacceptable, and frankly unaffordable, and will cause many individuals and families to forego insurance altogether.

I realize the hour is late, but for the sake of all affected Minnesotans I am imploring you to please put partisan politics aside and agree to a special session for the sole purpose of providing relief to these affected folks in 2017.

We will have plenty of time during the subsequent session to debate a lasting solution, but the need is now for 2017 relief.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Erik Simonson

State Representative
