Legislative Update - July 22, 2016

Friday, July 22, 2016

Dear Neighbors,

Beyond the nuts and bolts business of being a legislator, like passing budgets and enacting public policy, I’ve made a strong effort to better enable how this business gets conducted. The current election cycle is the most hostile and partisan in memory. In January, after the dust settles, we will need to focus on governing. Doing this effectively will require us to set aside nasty rhetoric, and instead build positive relationships with one another.

That’s why I’ve worked so hard to improve the atmosphere of civil discourse at the Minnesota Legislature. I’ve been proud of my work alongside colleagues of both parties as a facilitator through the National Institute for Civil Discourse at the University of Arizona to work through new approaches to work together and build trust. This coming January 4, as part of our annual “One Minnesota” conference, I’m excited to help facilitate a NICD training for all 201 Minnesota legislators.

Simply put, polarization and negativity can’t get in the way of accomplishing things for the citizens of Minnesota. I’m looking forward to sharing various principles and techniques with my colleagues in an official capacity with the goal of improving our civil climate and developing good working relationships among the legislators. That will smooth the path for the work ahead.

Last E-Update

This will be my last email update until after the November elections. There is a state law that prohibits a legislator from using state resources to proactively send out information to constituents after this week. I still, however, can respond to e-mails, letters or phone calls sent to me by constituents. I can also attend any community events, tour your business or organization and would be happy to do so.

Please contact me with any issues, questions, concerns or events. I look forward to visiting with you in person over the coming months.

Sincerely,

JoAnn Ward
