Sen. Marty and Rep. Hausman express grief and sympathy to family of Philando Castile

Thursday, July 7, 2016

ST. PAUL, MN – Following the police shooting death of Philando Castile in Falcon Heights on Wednesday, Sen. John Marty (DFL-Roseville) and Rep. Alice Hausman (DFL-St. Paul) who both represent the area, released the following statement:

“This morning Minnesota woke to another tragedy. Our hearts are full of grief. We want to express our deepest sympathy for Philando Castile’s family, his girlfriend Diamond Reynolds and her daughter, who both witnessed his killing.

After watching the painful video, it is clear that we need a full investigation by the United States Department of Justice. Not only was the shooting disturbing, but the treatment of Ms. Reynolds and her daughter in the aftermath also appears, in the video, to be inexcusable. The investigation needs to include a review of the events immediately following the shooting.

We want justice, but we also want to see change.

We must reexamine how we as a society address systemic racism. This will take reflection, it will be painful, and it won’t happen overnight – but as a society, we must look inwards before we can make change happen.”
