Statement on Speaker Daudt's new demands for a special session

Tuesday, June 21, 2016

SAINT PAUL, MINN. – House DFL Leader Paul Thissen released the following statement regarding Speaker Daudt’s new demands for a special session:

"By their own admission, Republicans have refused to provide any compromise offers to get needed tax, bonding and budget bills passed in a special session. Now we learn that they're demanding school vouchers and state takeover of local decision-making before they're even willing to talk about funding critical needs like higher education and public safety. If House Republicans were serious about doing the job they were elected to do, they wouldn't be bringing controversial new policy into the discussion at this stage.

It is also worth remembering that we wouldn't even be in the position we are in today had House Republicans gotten their work done correctly and on time during the regular session. Now that we are in this position, however, it is on House Republicans to provide a reasonable counterproposal for resolving our differences on the major work left undone. Judging by their actions today, it seems clear that they have no interest in doing that. Minnesotans deserve better."
