ST. PAUL – State Representative Bob Gunther (R-Fairmont) agreed with many of the proposals outlined in Governor Pawlenty’s State of the State Address, which Pawlenty made at the State Capitol on January 17.
“I’m pleased the Governor recognizes that Minnesotans are not under taxed, and does not want to wildly increase state spending,” Gunther said. “Property tax relief is high on his wish list, and it is near the top of my priority list as well.”
Pawlenty said lawmakers can enhance Minnesota’s prosperity and progress by focusing on better government by being fiscally responsible; better energy by improving our use of renewable fuels; better education through funding increases and academic reforms; and better health care by expanding access to more Minnesotans through private sector solutions.
Pawlenty also described proposals for current and former members of the military, including a tax exemption for military pension benefits; a Minnesota GI bill for college expenses; full funding for the National Guard’s budget requests; and dramatic increases for Minnesota’s veterans programs.
“Veterans issues are important to me as I am a veteran myself,” Gunther said. “These should be issues nearly every lawmaker can support.”
“I enjoyed Governor Pawlenty’s speech,” Gunther continued. “He gave us a positive vision with some bold ideas, and I look forward to debating them as session progresses.”
