St. Paul DFLer to chair House Education Policy Committee
ST. PAUL - Minnesota House Speaker-designate Margaret Anderson Kelliher recently named State Representative Carlos Mariani (DFL-St. Paul) to chair the House E-12 Education Policy Committee when the Legislature reconvenes in January. Mariani, who was first elected to the House in 1990, will become the first Latino to chair any committee in the Minnesota Legislature's history.
"I'm honored to have the opportunity to chair this key committee and play a role in the Minnesota Latino community's history," Mariani said. "I'm hopefully the first of many future Latino committee chairs in Minnesota."
Mariani says he will guide the committee in making policy that results in higher graduation and college entry rates for Minnesota's Latinos.
"Latinos represent the fastest growing K-12 student population. Latinos live and work in nearly every community across Minnesota."
Mariani says 2007 will be an important year for Latinos in the Legislature. There will now be two Latinos in the House with the election of Augustine "Willie" Dominguez in Minneapolis and Patricia Torres Ray Minnesota will become Minnesota's first Latina State Senator.
"Our community is a key part of what makes Minnesota such a great place to live," Mariani added. "I'm glad we'll have more representation and opportunities come January."
