Legislative Update (Oct. 16, 2015)

Friday, October 16, 2015

Dear Neighbors,

I hope you’re staying warm! Be sure to get out and enjoy the fall weekend to take in the autumn colors while we still have them.

Sen. Tom Coburn

Earlier this week, I attended a briefing with United States Senator Tom Coburn at an event with the Center of the American Experiment. Senator Coburn presented his case of how the government is overspending, placing our country in a deep, dangerous debt cycle. While frightening, it was an important reminder of how our governments – federal, state, and local – must be stewards of the people and attempt to show fiscal restraint. We need to keep our budgets and spending in line with tax revenue in order to avoid leaving our state and country worse off for our children.

Domestic Abuse Project

I also attended the annual luncheon for the Domestic Abuse Project (DAP). This group has been an important part of the Twin Cities’ effort to stop domestic violence since 1979. DAP works with all members of the family – fathers, mothers, and children – to stop and prevent future domestic violence. Just last year, DAP therapy staff provided services to 600 people. This is such a valuable, essential organization to assist families throughout the Twin Cities. It’s truly a great group and I hope you will take the time to learn more here.

Alma Mater Homecoming

Last weekend was my homecoming celebration at North Dakota State University! I met with the board of trustees and the president to discuss issues at the university. We also had great weather for the weekend and came away with a 31-28 victory over No. 10 Northern Iowa. Go Bison!

Many of you have contacted me in the last couple weeks and I hope you will continue your correspondence. I’d love to hear from you regarding any questions, concerns, or ideas. My office number is 651-296-5502 or try my email at Rep.Dennis.Smith@house.mn.

Have a great weekend!

Dennis
