News from Rep. Roz Peterson 10-15-2015

Thursday, October 15, 2015

Dear Friends,

I've received a handful of emails over the past couple of weeks wondering when the Department of Revenue will be sending property tax refunds. The Department has created a useful lookup site where you can search for the status of your property tax refund, as well as your state income tax refund when that time comes next spring. Keep this page bookmarked for future reference, and feel free to share it with your friends who might be wondering about their returns as well.

Visit https://www.mndor.state.mn.us/tp/refund/_/ to see the status of your returns.

Good budget news
Last week the Minnesota Management and Budget office announced Minnesota's latest revenue forecast, showing that Minnesota tax revenue is $136 million higher than expected. Low gas prices continue to drive more spending which is helping Minnesota's economy and creating more tax revenues. In November there will be a comprehensive budget forecast announced that includes all government spending, and will give us a better look at the total surplus, which is likely to be around $1 billion or higher. It's my hope we can send as much of that surplus as possible back to hardworking families in the form of tax relief and use a portion to help our road and bridge infrastructure. Stay tuned next month for an update on our surplus.

Sprinkler mandate overturned
This week the Minnesota Appeals Court overturned an effort by Governor Dayton's administration to implement via administrative rule (instead of passing a law) a requirement that expensive sprinkler systems be installed in certain new homes. This is a proposal that failed to pass under full DFL control in 2013 and 2014 and has seen strong bipartisan opposition because it significantly raises the cost of building a new home.  The Court of Appeals overturned the requirement, a victory for common sense and for those who want to or plan to build a new home. I will keep you updated if the ruling is appealed or if there are other changes.

City of Burnsville Halloween Fest
The City of Burnsville is hosting a fun family Halloween event on October 23rd at Nicollet Commons Park (12550 Nicollet Ave in Bursnville). The cost is $5 per family, and includes a treat trail, music, dancing, and a magician. This is a perfect event for young kids. Good Luck on Friday!
Lakeville North, Lakeville South, and Burnsville all have big games coming up this Friday as they look to secure spots in the Minnesota State High School League State Football Tournament. Lakeville North will host Buffalo, Lakeville South will be on the road against Blaine, and Burnsville will host Forest Lake. All games are tomorrow Friday starting at 7PM. Apple Valley plays next Tuesday in their section game against Park Cottage Grove. Check MSHSL.org for game schedules, tournament brackets, and more details. Best of luck to all the student athletes and their families!
