RELEASE: Rep. Sundin Statement: House Republican Bonding Bill Fails Minnesotans

Thursday, May 19, 2016

SAINT PAUL, MN—Today, the House GOP capital investment “bonding” bill failed to receive a supermajority required to pass the House. Despite repeated offers by House Democrats to work with House Republicans to craft a bipartisan bill, House Republicans put together the bonding bill behind closed doors and without any input from Democrats.

Rep. Mike Sundin (DFL- Esko) released the following statement:

“There is no better example of the poor leadership Republicans are showing than this absolute failure of a bonding bill. They are incapable of governing. Minnesotans should be ashamed of Republicans who could have worked together with DFL members to use our strong budget surplus to leverage big investments in our crumbling infrastructure, but instead they decided to play politics with this disgraceful bill. I believe they knew this bill would fail, and I’m angry that they are wasting our time and spoiling our ability to move Minnesota forward. Republican leaders had several months to talk to DFL members about what they would need in a bonding bill in order for it to pass, and they haven’t done the work. They chose to fund projects with no public review in districts that are held by Republican members, and found a way to avoid funding specific projects in districts like ours.

"I will continue to fight for the many important projects in our district, and I’m hopeful that a bonding bill can materialize in a conference committee with the Senate and be more balanced and responsible. I want a bill that helps everyone, and that all Minnesotans can support.”
