STATEMENT: Rep. Dehn Applauds MPCA for Taking Action to Close Northern Metals

Thursday, May 19, 2016

SAINT PAUL, MN – The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency is taking legal steps to stop operations at Northern Metal Recycling. The legal action is being taken because MPCA officials say Northern Metals provided misleading information in the process of getting its air quality permit in 2012, and as a result is polluting the air in north Minneapolis.

Rep. Raymond Dehn (DFL-Minneapolis) released the following statement:

“I’m glad to hear that the MPCA is moving to shut down Northern Metals in Minneapolis. For decades, legislators and advocates have been calling attention to the pollution and harm that the shredder is causing to our community. It has now come to light that not only has Northern Metals been polluting the air in my community, they’ve been lying to the MPCA to obtain permits to expand their operations. It’s beyond time that they’re shut down. I’m glad they listened to the voices of our community, the advocates, and those elected officials working with them.”
