Rep. Flanagan Statement on Sunday Liquor Sales

Friday, May 13, 2016

ST. PAUL, MN – Yesterday, a majority of the Minnesota House voted not to approve a provision which would have repealed Minnesota's prohibition on Sunday sales of alcohol. State Rep. Peggy Flanagan (DFL – St. Louis Park) released the following statement on the vote:

“I have been carefully considering this issue throughout my time in the Legislature. I didn't support the Sunday sales amendment because, as written, it would have passed the buck regarding Sunday sales to municipalities. Too often legislators shrug responsibility on controversial issues to local leaders, and this was one of those instances. I was planning to vote in support of the broader language introduced by Rep. Phyllis Kahn that set clear provisions and would have expanded Sunday sales statewide. Unfortunately, the amendment was pulled from the floor and we could not take action on her amendment. I'm disappointed that I missed the opportunity to vote in favor of Sunday sales, and I look forward to being able to vote in favor of a good bill in the future.

With only one week of the 2016 legislative session remaining, many of our state's biggest challenges remain - among them, critical transit needs, long-term underfunding of education, and investments in our youngest Minnesotans and their families. In these final few days, I hope that the Legislature can finally make progress on these priorities.”
