Legislative Update- April 7, 2016

Thursday, April 7, 2016

Dear Neighbors,

I hope this finds you well. Below is a brief update on an informational session I hosted with my legislative colleagues and MADD members on ignition interlocks. I have also included an invitation to join me at my “Second Saturday” coffee hour.

Ignition Interlocks

On March 24, the day after HF 1112 my bill on Ignition Interlocks was heard, MADD volunteers and Minnesota legislators held an informational event in St. Paul on interlock laws to provide an educational opportunity to learn about ignition interlock technology and its implementation in Minnesota.

Ignition interlocks are effective in reducing drunk driving offenses by up to 67% while the device is installed compared to license suspension alone. In addition, interlocks help reduce repeat offenses after the device is removed by 39% compared to offenders who never installed an interlock.

Since HF 1112 is not being given a hearing in Public Safety, I have signed onto HF 2690, which deals with required ignition interlocks for repeat offenders. I’m hopeful the bipartisan bill will quickly make its way through the committee process and be strengthened on its way.

Second Saturday Coffee

This is your friendly reminder that this Saturday, April 9 is my monthly “Second Saturday” coffee hour. I will be meeting those interested at Dunn Brothers Coffee (120 Elton Hills Drive NW, Rochester) from 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. I hope you can make it, and that you will bring your comments and questions.

Always feel free to contact me on any issue that is important to you. I can be reached at 651-296-9249 or 800-657-3855 or via email at rep.kim.norton@house.mn.

Sincerely,

Kim Norton

State Representative
