Statement: Governor’s Supplemental Budget Boosts Higher Ed Initiatives

Tuesday, March 15, 2016

SAINT PAUL, MN – Today, Governor Mark Dayton released his 2016 supplemental budget proposal. Deputy Minority Leader Melissa Hortman (DFL- Brooklyn Park) praised Governor Dayton’s budget plan, which calls for significant investments in broadband, transportation, and education programs for early learners through college students.

Deputy Minority Leader, Rep. Melissa Hortman issued the following statement:

"We must work to address the student debt crisis that is affecting Minnesota students and families. The Governor’s plan to provide $20 million in Equity and Opportunity Initiative Grants will help college students graduate on-time and with less debt. It dovetails with the agenda House DFLers put forward to make college education more affordable. We support the Governor's initiative, and it pairs well with our proposals to freeze tuition, expand student loan refinancing, and provide tax credits for student loan payments of up to $5,000 per year. We share the Governor's commitment to making higher education more affordable and accessible and look forward to working with him in the 2016 session."

Rep. Hortman encourages community members to contact her on any legislative issue.  She can be reached by email at rep.melissa.hortman@house.mn or telephone at 651-296-4280.
