Senator Klobuchar's vote against state GMO labeling

Wednesday, March 2, 2016

Dear Friends,

I’m really disappointed that my friend Senator Klobuchar voted to ban states from instituting GMO labeling, as reported by the Star Tribune in Bill outlawing state GMO labeling passes Senate committee.

As a biophysicists who specialized in DNA recombination, I’ve written extensively on GMO labeling. GMO labeling isn’t a food safety issue. The end products, be it crops, milk or meat, are virtually the same be it GMO and non-GMO. The real issue is about the health effects it has on animals, antibiotic resistance, and the ever increasing use of pesticides that kill pollinators and create super weeds.

Giving consumers the choice to buy non-GMO products is about helping animals and the environment. We shouldn’t give in to big corporations and stop states from giving consumers the ability to make an informed choice.

You can read articles I’ve written about this very topic in Governing Magazine and the Star Tribune.

Sincerely,

Phyllis
