Legislative Update - February 22, 2016

Monday, February 22, 2016

Dear Neighbors,

With just under two months until the deadline for income tax filing, I’d like to share with you a couple of resources that might be helpful to you or someone you know.

Through Free File, a partnership between the IRS and tax software companies, all taxpayers who made $62,000 or less in 2015 can visit www.IRS.gov/freefile to prepare and e-file their federal tax returns at no cost. About 100 million Americans – or 70 percent of taxpayers – are eligible. In addition, Free File offers a basic e-filing service for everyone, regardless of income. Taxpayers can also use Free File to e-file an extension.

Free File is made possible through a public-private partnership between the IRS and the Free File Alliance, a non-profit coalition of leading tax software companies. To learn more about the program, visit www.freefilealliance.org or www.IRS.gov/freefile.

Additionally, free personalized help is available for those who may need it. Sponsored by the AARP Tax Aide Foundation and Minnesota Department of Revenue, the following locations in the community provide free income tax assistance for low-to-moderate income taxpayers, persons with disabilities, and seniors:

Vine Adult Community Center, 421 E Hickory St, Mankato (Thursdays from 8:45 a.m.-noon and 1:00 – 6:00 p.m., Fridays from 8:45 a.m. – noon and 1:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.; call 507-387-1666 for an appointment)

Lake Crystal Towers, 203 S. Main St, Lake Crystal (Specializing in military returns; Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.; call 507-726-2179 to make an appointment)

Minnesota Valley Action Council, 706 N Victory Dr, Mankato (For Spanish speaking taxpayers; Tuesdays from 5:30 – 9:00 p.m. and Saturdays from noon – 4:00 p.m.; call 507-345-6822 for an appointment)

Taxpayers are asked to bring their social security card, picture ID, a blank or canceled check for direct deposit, 2014 tax return, all 2015 tax forms including W-2s, 1099s and other documentation of income. For more information, visit the DOR online here.

I also encourage you to reach out to my office directly if you encounter any problems as you go through the process of filing your state tax returns. Feel free to contact me by email at rep.jack.considine@house.mn or call me at 651-296-3248 if I can be of assistance.

Sincerely,
