Legislative Update & Town Hall Notice - February 23, 2016

Tuesday, February 23, 2016

Dear Neighbors,

I wanted to let you know about three events coming up on February 27, March 6 and March 10, 2016.

Council for Minnesotans of African Heritage Forum on Racial Disparities – February 27

On Saturday, February 27, 2016 from 1:00-5:00pm at the Midway YMCA the Council for Minnesotans of African Heritage will be hosting a forum to discuss legislation addressing racial disparities that will be discussed in the upcoming legislative session which begins on March 8th. I’m the author of several bills addressing racial disparities in education, job training, housing, criminal justice and senior care, and I hope we’ll get an opportunity to discuss some of these bills. I encourage you to attend this event and give your input on ways to increase racial equity in our community and state.

If you have more questions about the forum you can call 651-757-1750 (Council for Minnesotans of African Heritage).

Frogtown Green Fair – March 6

On March 6, 2016 Frogtown Green will be sponsoring a networking and information fair on sustainable, greening and farming activities in the neighborhood. The event is Sunday, March 6, from 2-4 PM, at Rondo Library. I am planning to attend, and I hope you’ll join me!

The purpose of Frogtown Green is to build the neighborhood's health, beauty and well-being, by planting, growing, and building the local food economy, protecting the environment, maintaining parks programming, or otherwise engaging in sustainable, green activity.

There will be two dozen individuals, groups and agencies, ranging from the informal activities of resident beekeepers, to community gardens, to local businesses investing in the neighborhood's green infrastructure. There will also be information about jobs and internships and cost savings from bulk purchases of greening supplies.

If you have questions about the event on March 6th, you can call Patricia Ohmans at 651-757-5970.

Town Hall with Senator Pappas – March 10

I will be hosting a town hall meeting with Senator Sandy Pappas on Thursday, March 10 from 5:30-7:30pm at the Rondo Community Outreach Library to discuss issues coming before the legislature in 2016, and work that remains undone from the 2015 legislative session. I encourage you to attend with your questions, or just to listen. We always have an engaging conversation and it is helpful to hear your input during these meetings. Don’t worry if you can’t make this town hall, there will be additional opportunities for you to join us at meetings in the coming weeks. See details below:
