SAINT PAUL, MN — The Netflix documentary Making a Murderer has gripped the nation and has everyone talking about the case of murdered photographer Teresa Halbach in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin.
It has generated great discussion about all elements of our criminal justice system. Members of all parties of the Minnesota Legislature have been meeting regularly discussing justice related policy that could be addressed in the upcoming legislative session.
Dean Strang was a defense attorney for Steven Avery who was ultimately convicted of murder. Strang will be at the State Office Building in Room 200 at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, January 27 to discuss highlights from the case.
“As a law enforcement officer and legislator I value the discussion with Mr. Strang as a great opportunity to learn and hear perspectives we don’t get to hear every day," said Rep. Dan Schoen. "I have had the opportunity to read and hear more details about the case than what was shown during the documentary on Netflix. The jury did find Mr. Avery and his nephew guilty of murdering Teresa Halbach."
"The documentary has the public inquiring about the processes in our criminal justice system from the investigation of crimes by law enforcement and the defense or prosecution of suspects. It’s my goal to make sure our justice system has the trust of the public and takes any measures to prevent innocent people from losing their freedom. It’s also important to make sure those who are guilty are handed the punishment they deserve. The documentary highlights issues which have left many Americans questioning the end result of the trial. Mr. Strang has a long history of criminal defense work. I look forward to hearing his perspective on these issues.”
