Rep. Jon Applebaum (44B) - Legislative Update

Dear neighbors:

Tomorrow, Wednesday, November 11th, is the observance of Veterans Day. I hope you will join me in taking a moment to reflect upon the service the men and women of our military have given us.

The official State of Minnesota Veterans Day Program is tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial Community Center in Inver Grove Heights, which follows a free breakfast from 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. The program includes appearances by Gov. Mark Dayton, Minnesota Veterans Affairs Commissioner Larry Shellito, Sen. Amy Klobuchar, the 34th Infantry Division Red Bull Band, and WCCO’s Frank Vascellaro.

Locally, the Lake Minnetonka Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) hosts its fourth annual “Plant a Flag for Freedom” ceremony tomorrow between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. at Heritage Park in Wayzata, at the intersection of Wayzata Blvd. and Highway 101. At this event, community members will have the opportunity to plant a flag, provided by DAR volunteers, in honor of a veteran, whose name will be registered on an Honor Board.

I’m sure at least one member of your family has worn a uniform serving the United States of America, and veterans are among our most valued friends, neighbors, and co-workers. These brave individuals have left their families to often be placed in dangerous situations and have faced uncertain futures. This tradition of service dates back to our country’s founding, and will unquestionably continue for generations to come.

As we honor those who served, it is important to remember that the battles do not end when those who return receive their discharge papers. Many veterans struggle to reintegrate into their former lives after their deployment ends by finding adequate housing, employment, and health care. Here are some resources to help:

Minnesota National Guard – Beyond the Yellow Ribbon

Minnesota Assistance Council For Veterans

Homeless Veteran Prevention and Assistance

Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs

To those of you who have served: you have my deepest gratitude for what you have given our country. I join with the rest of our community in aiming to give you the respect and commendation you deserve not just on Veterans Day, but every day of the year. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Jon Applebaum

State Representative
