Koznick Connection: Legislative Update (Sept. 25, 2015)

Friday, September 25, 2015

Dear Lakeville Neighbors,

It’s been a busy, yet fun, week in Lakeville! I wanted to get in touch to pass along a few great events that recently took place in our area, as well as information on the November 3 school levy vote.

Tom’s Big Ride

As you may have seen, one of our residents, Tom Mork, recently completed a 2,100-mile bicycle journey to raise awareness of mental illness. Tom, along with Lakeville city councilmember Doug Anderson, Patrick Boria, and Bob Thimjon, began “Tom’s Big Ride” near the Mississippi River’s end in Venice, Louisiana and finished at the river’s headwaters in Lake Itasca. Through the journey, the group not only spread awareness of mental illness, but also raised over $100,000 for the Minnesota chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).

I was fortunate to meet with Tom at a Rotary Club meeting last week. The awareness and funds raised through “Tom’s Big Ride” are astounding and I’m proud to call Tom a neighbor in Lakeville.

Honoring Mick Tingelhoff

Like many of you, I attended the Lakeville North vs. Lakeville South football game on Friday. Prior to kickoff, we were honored to host former Minnesota Viking and 2015 Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee, Mick Tingelhoff. Mick had a fantastic career and will go down as an all-time great Viking. His tenacity, dedication, and work ethic are a great reminder to our students and parents to always give our best. I was honored to present Mick with a Minnesota House of Representatives Resolution commemorating his outstanding career.

Congratulations to Mick on a fantastic career! Photo courtesy of Nick Kelly (@NickKellyLNHS).

Mick picked a great game to attend, too. Lakeville North pulled out the win, 38-28, to take home the Big Cat Trophy. Congrats to both teams on a hard-fought game that made all Lakeville residents proud!

Aging and Wellness Expo

On Thursday, I attended Congressman John Kline’s Aging and Wellness Expo for Seniors at the Heritage Center here in Lakeville. It was a great chance to interact with many of you, as well as caretakers and service providers, to learn more about the needs of our seniors. I thank Congressman Kline for hosting such a valuable event in our city. The Elder Resource Association South of the River has a great guidebook and website for senior information at www.erasouth.org.

Here’s me with Shirley Ackerman from ExperienceWorks at the Aging and Wellness Expo.

Special School District Property Tax Levy Election on November 3

This week marked the official start of fall, which means we are just a few weeks away from casting votes on School Districts’ 192, 194, and 196 proposed property tax levies. Taking part in the November 3 vote, on either side, is an important way to exercise your rights and have your voice heard on this issue. Please plan to vote, these levies will impact your property taxes and schools!

As always, please contact our office if you have a question or concern. You can reach me at (651) 296-6926 or Rep.Jon.Koznick@house.mn.

Sincerely,

Jon Koznick
