RELEASE: Ahead of hearing, Garofalo urges Gov. Dayton: Work with us for cleaner & cheaper energy

Tuesday, September 15, 2015
SAINT PAUL, MN—Chair of the Job Growth and Energy Affordability Committee, Rep. Pat Garofalo, R-Farmington, sent a letter to Governor Mark Dayton Monday urging him to work with the legislature and with neighboring states to oppose the Obama Administration’s Clean Power Plan and develop policies to make Minnesota energy both cleaner and cheaper.

The letter comes ahead of the September 21st hearing of the House Job Growth and Energy Affordability Committee which will take place at 6PM at the Becker Community Center to discuss the impact of the Clean Power Plan on the Sherco Power Plant and the surrounding community.

Garofalo invited Governor Dayton to send a representative from his administration to the hearing to learn about the concerns from Central Minnesota residents about the Clean Power Plan. The Dayton administration’s approach threatens the existence of most of the state's coal-fired power plants, including the Sherco Plant in Becker. Representatives from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) are expected to attend and testify at next Monday's hearing and discuss their role in crafting the state's Clean Power Plan.

"Governor Dayton and the MPCA's approach threatens the jobs and livelihoods of hundreds of Minnesota residents, and will mean higher energy bills for all Minnesotans without producing any measurable environmental benefit." Garofalo said. "I urge Governor Dayton to work with legislators on both sides of the aisle who oppose this plan, as well as with neighboring states to develop policies that will make energy cleaner and cheaper."
