Legislative Update (Sept. 11, 2015)

Friday, September 11, 2015

Dear Neighbors,

I hope you’ve all had a great week and are looking forward to a fantastic weekend. As most of you know, once Labor Day passes, we can all get a lot busier. I attended a number of great events this week and wanted to share a few highlights with you.

Earlier this week I went to the Maple Grove Rotary meeting where I heard a presentation regarding light rail trains near our district. It was a good reminder of the gridlock we sometimes experience in the northwest suburbs. We need smart, practical infrastructure investments to aid our growing communities. Improving our roads and bridges continues to be my focus, including the completion of Highway 610. The 2016 legislative session will be an opportunity to visit the transportation needs around our state.

With school starting back up, I met with Wayzata School District officials. We discussed new reforms, education funding, and the legislature’s most recent education plan. If you would like to hear more about the education initiatives passed in 2015, be sure to pick up last week’s copy of the Osseo-Maple Grove Press to read my column.

The Minnesota Economic Club hosted Dr. John B. Taylor, an economics professor from Stanford University. I attended and enjoyed discussing the state of our economy and principles to sustain long-term growth. Hearing Dr. Taylor speak on these issues, and his famous rule of economics, the “Taylor Rule,” was a remarkable opportunity.

Today I went to the TwinWest Chamber of Commerce meeting. Speaking with this group provides a great opportunity to discuss challenges and opportunities in business, as well as how our state government can create a climate to help small businesses thrive.

I’m very excited for this weekend! First, it looks like we’ll experience some great early fall weather; that’s tough to beat in Minnesota. Tonight, both of our high school football teams play some top competition and we wish them luck!

In addition, our area is home to a fun event, the Osseo Lions Roar Days. Starting today and ending tomorrow night, this event is entertaining for the entire family. Highlights for Saturday include a 5k run/walk at 10 a.m., a parade at noon, and live music in the evening. The event is located in downtown Osseo, at the corner of 3rd Street and Central Avenue. I hope to see you and your family there!

I’ll be in touch next week but, until then, feel free to contact my office with any questions or suggestions. You can reach me at 651-296-5502 or Rep.Dennis.Smith@house.mn.

Sincerely,

Dennis
