Statement from House DFL Leader Thissen on Minimum Wage

Friday, July 31, 2015
St. Paul - Minnesota's minimum wage is set to increase from $8/hour to $9/hour tomorrow, Saturday, August 1st. To mark the occasion, House DFL Leader Paul Thissen issued the following statement:

"If there is one thing Minnesotans can agree on, it is that everybody should have a chance for dignified work that allows them to take care of their family. Starting tomorrow, nearly 300,000 hardworking Minnesotans will see an increase in their paychecks thanks to the law passed by DFL legislative majorities and signed by Governor Dayton last year. This will not only help these folks provide for their families and make ends meet, it will also boost local economies as those additional dollars are reinvested in their communities. I want to again thank the co-chairs of the Raise the Wage Coalition, Peggy Flanagan, Brian Rusche and Shar Knutson, former Rep. Ryan Winkler, as well as the countless other Minnesotans who helped make this a reality.

Republicans in the legislature like to talk about boosting family budgets, yet during this year's legislative session they sided with corporate special interests in trying to slash the minimum wage for thousands of Minnesota’s tipped workers. Actions speak louder than words. Democrats in the Minnesota House will continue to push for policies that put working families ahead of corporate special interests, and we call on our Republican colleagues to do the same."
