Legislative Update (July 10th, 2015)

Monday, July 13, 2015

Neighbors,

I have had a great week meeting with constituents and their families at a number of Fourth of July and Maple Grove Days events taking place around town. Attending these events reminds me how fortunate we are to live in our community. We are truly blessed.

It is my hope that you and your family have the opportunity to attend one of the many events that are scheduled to take place this weekend as Maple Grove Days comes to a close. You can find a rundown of remaining events here.

I am excited about the opportunity to participate in a reading event this coming Monday at the Maple Grove Barnes and Noble. Beginning at 9:00 am and running until 9:00 pm, Barnes and Noble will be holding a To Kill a Mockingbird read-a-thon. Invited guests will take turns reading portions of the book in 30 minute intervals. My 30 minute reading time is scheduled to begin at 4:00 pm.

To Kill a Mockingbird is an American classic and a book that has had a positive impact on my life. Having read the book in grade school as well as again in my 20s, I am reminded of its timeless lessons of treating everyone with respect and dignity.

Many American classics provide valuable life lessons to students and I am hopeful that our schools will continue to make it a priority to include these books in their curriculum. In an effort to encourage this, the legislature passed legislation this year that reduces the amount of mandated tests students are required to take. It is my hope that this will give teachers time for more hands on teaching opportunities that will include engaging students in American classics like To Kill a Mockingbird.

I hope you and your family are available Monday to come to the Maple Grove Barnes and Noble and participate in this wonderful event.

Please be sure to stay in touch. I would love to visit with you and our neighbors in Maple Grove and Osseo, learning how to better serve you as we reconvene next March. You can reach me via phone at (651) 296-5502, or via email at Rep.Dennis.Smith@house.mn.

Have a great weekend and I hope to see you around town at one of the many Maple Grove Days events!

Dennis
