Legislative Update

Legislative Update- February 22, 2017

Dear Neighbors,

Legislative activity is picking up at the Capitol.  Here’s an update on what’s been moving through the process:

Sunday Liquor Sales

On Monday, the House of Representatives voted to approve Sunday liquor sales. The measure must also pass the Senate, and if it does, Governor Dayton said he would sign the bill into law. Recent grassroots support from Minnesotans has led the way for Sunday sales after a 159 year ban.  My hope is the Senate will quickly pass the repeal legislation so we can focus on other priorities facing Minnesotans – rising student loan debt, transportation funding, and working on health insurance changes– to name a few.

Pensions

In response to studies showing that people are living longer than expected, Minnesota's public pension plans are proposing financial sustainability measures to ensure that the pension funds will be financially solvent for future retirees. These proposals include increasing employer and employee contribution rates and decreasing COLAs for certain plans. The Legislature will consider these proposals over the next couple months and may include them in an Omnibus Pension Bill.  To read more about the specific bills, click here.

Community Gatherings

I have started organizing small community group gatherings in our district. Others will follow throughout the year. If you are interested in learning more, please contact me with the group or neighborhood information.  This is a great opportunity for a smaller group setting in the district if unable to attend a group advocacy ‘Day at the Capitol’.

Congratulations to Woodbury Constituent Margaret Wachholz

I’m pleased to recognize Ms. Margaret Wachholz as Citizen of the Year in the City of Woodbury.  Margaret blends her personal commitment and passion with a caring spirit that engages others to make Woodbury a better place to live, work, and play.  Her volunteer experience and community engagement with our senior citizens certainly is admirable to say the least. Congratulations, Margaret!

Please feel free to contact me on any issue of interest.  I look forward to hearing your ideas.

Sincerely,

JoAnn Ward
