Saint Paul, Minnesota – State Representative Barb Yarusso (DFL—Shoreview) joined Representative Patti Fritz (DFL – Faribault) and Rep. Tom Huntley (DFL – Duluth), chair of the Health and Human Services Finance committee, and other DFL legislators to announce a commitment from the House DFL leadership that long-term care workers would not see a reduction in funding this biennium and may receive a rate increase. The House released a budget target for Health and Human Services that calls for $150 million in cuts and in response Rep. Yarusso and some of her colleagues have advocated to protect nursing home funding and long-term care workers.
“Protecting our seniors and most vulnerable is an important priority,” said Rep. Yarusso. “Nursing homes and long-term care facilities are underfunded and overcrowded, and cannot accommodate further reductions in staff. Increasing funding for these facilities is vital to providing quality and timely care to our seniors.”
The House Health and Human Services committee will continue to work out details and the omnibus bill is expected to be released next week.
“Making these cuts to this part of the budget will be difficult, but any cuts will contribute to a responsibly balanced budget. I am encouraged about the budget progress that we are making at the Capitol and know that members of both parties are interested in building a budget that helps middle class families and moves our state forward.”
