Dear friends,
Last night, Governor Dayton delivered his State of the State address to a joint convention of the House and Senate. In his speech, the governor outlined his vision for Minnesota and made a case for his various budget proposals including tax reform, education investment and creating jobs.
I am most encouraged by Governor Dayton’s focus on strengthening education. As a former educator I know that our classrooms and universities are an important piece to our state’s livelihood. A great education system is part of what has always made Minnesota a leader. I am glad to see proposals to fund optional all-day kindergarten, early childhood education scholarships, expanded funding for higher education and improved after school programs.
After a decade of deep cuts and budget deficits, I appreciate that Governor Dayton is taking a new approach to the state budget and funding priorities. The status quo of recent budgets—borrowing and gimmicks—has left our schools, infrastructure and economy falling behind. I look forward to working with the governor on bipartisan legislation to move our state forward and I will keep you informed as new proposals arise.

Senator Bev Scalze, Representative Jason Isaacson and I will be hosting a town hall meeting this Saturday, February 9, at Shoreview City Hall (4600 Victoria St. N) from 9:00 am – 10:15 am. We will be discussing what's happening at the Capitol with members of our community and answering questions. I hope to see you there!
In the coming days and weeks, I will be examining many legislative proposals. Please contact me anytime during the legislative session with your input. I can be reached by phone at (651) 296-0141 or by email at rep.barb.yarusso@house.mn.
