Needed Transportation Projects Move Forward

Saint Paul, Minnesota – Last week, the Minnesota Department of Transportation released its 2013 construction schedule which includes 337 projects totaling $1.1 billion. Three needed projects on Highway 71 will begin in a matter of months in Western Minnesota. State Rep. Mary Sawatzky (DFL – Willmar) said the projects will put workers back on the job and improve roads for years to come.

“This is certainly good news for our area and our economy,” said Rep. Sawatzky. “Lane closures and orange cones are frustrating to see, but in the long run it’s well worth it for the jobs that are created, the improved infrastructure that helps our businesses and community, and for the improved safety on our roads.”

Local projects announced include:

  • Highway 71 — Hwy 7 to Willmar — will resurface 11 miles and repair bridge. The total cost is expected to be $3.8 million. Construction is scheduled to begin in July and conclude in September. Daily lane closures should be expected. This project will provide a smoother, safer road and bridge surface.
  • Highway 71 — Kandiyohi CR 24 to North Jct Hwy 23 — will resurface 3 miles and lengthen northbound turn lane. The total cost is expected to be $536,207. Construction is scheduled to begin in July and conclude in September. Daily lane closures should be expected. This project will provide a smoother and safer road surface.
  • Highway 71 — Willmar bypass — will install cable media barrier. The total cost is expected to be $750,000. Construction is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2013. Shoulder closures should be expected. This project will provide a safer road.
