Education Opportunity Credit Moving Through Legislature

Today, students from across the state joined Representative Zachary Dorholt (DFL-St. Cloud) and Senator Greg Clausen (DFL-Apple Valley) in support of a bill that would make higher education more affordable and accessible to all students in Minnesota. The Education Opportunity Credit, (HF 1097 and SF 997), relieves student loan debts for Minnesota residents that have graduated from a Minnesota higher education institution and continue to work in the state following graduation.

“Education is our number one asset here in Minnesota, and we can’t afford to lose that,” said bill sponsor Rep. Zachary Dorholt.  “The costs of my tuition at St. Cloud State University almost doubled by the time I graduated from school and the costs continue to rise.”

Minnesota now has the 3rd highest student debt average in the nation of $29,793.  Tuition at the University of Minnesota has increased 174% since 2000.

“As Vice-Chair of the House Higher Education Committee, I have heard a lot about rising tuition costs and the state’s role in this problem,” commented Rep. Dorholt.  “The Education Opportunity Credit is one tool we can use to help make college more affordable for students and to reduce debt for graduates in Minnesota.”

SF 997 will be heard in today’s Senate Higher Education Committee.

Rep. Dorholt can be reached by phone at (651) 296-6612 or by email at rep.zachary.dorholt@house.mn.
