Dear Neighbor,
It was great having local resident Pat Lunemann, president of the Minnesota Milk Producers Association, join me in the House chamber for this week’s State of the State Address by Gov. Mark Dayton.
Pat was one of dozens of business owners who participated in a discussion forum with legislators prior to the governor’s speech. I really appreciated the hearing their thoughts.
Business owners spent much of our time talking about how the job climate in Minnesota is among the nation’s worst and new taxes proposed by Dayton would only set us back further. Experts say the governor’s proposed taxes would cost businesses $1.5 billion in 2015 alone!
Our state has made big strides in recovering from the biggest economic downturn since the Great Depression. We should be asking how government can get out of the way so our businesses can do what they do best. The governor’s plan – including a new business-to-business tax – would take us the wrong direction, adding $3.7 billion in new taxes to fuel more government spending.
Constituent survey
I invite local citizens to participate in a survey I am conducting to gather input on everything from the state budget to gun laws. Click here to access it. Your input would be greatly appreciated.
Gun discussion at forefront
It is amazing how many emails I recently have received from citizens concerned about House proposals which would restrict gun rights. More people are contacting me about this subject than any other so far this session. The vast majority of emailers are urging me to protect their Second Amendment rights.
Our legislative office building was packed with people delivering the same message recently during three days of gun-related legislative hearings. This is a grass-roots effort led by people who do not want the new majority to infringe on our constitutional rights.
Citizen input on this issue is greatly appreciated, but it is concerning the new majority would focus on limiting our Second Amendment rights instead of working to enact a new state budget, help people get back to work and grow our economy.
There are a few people on the pro-restriction side of the gun discussion who seem to think the National Rifle Association is a major player on this issue, but that simply is not the case. I have not met with NRA officials or received any contributions from the group. In fact, the NRA has contributed relatively little to legislative campaigns in Minnesota.
As for the proposed gun laws, I encourage citizens to visit www.house.mn to read the text of H.F. 241 and H.F. 242 to see some of what the new majority is proposing. We all want to keep guns out of the wrong hands, but it cannot come at the expense of restricting gun ownership for law-abiding Minnesotans. The last thing we should want is to strip guns from the good folks.

I will keep you posted as things develop at St. Paul. As always, I welcome input on these and any other issues important to you. Your communication helps me continue doing my best to represent the wishes of our area.
Sincerely,
Mark
