REPRESENTATIVE MELIN AND SENATOR TOMASSONI SECURE CENTRAL IRON RANGE SANITARY SEWER DISTRICT GRANT

State Rep. Carly Melin (DFL-Hibbing) and State Sen. David Tomassoni (DFL-Chisholm) succeeded in adding special language for the Central Iron Range Sanitary Sewer District (CIRSSD) to the statewide bonding bill passed last session and signed into law by Governor Dayton. The language secured an additional $5 million grant through the Wastewater Infrastructure Funding (WIF) program to go towards construction of new state-of-the-art wastewater facilities on the Iron Range. This $5 million grant increases the state's contribution for the overall project to $13.7 million. The IRRRB has contributed $5.5 million.

The CIRSSD project includes construction of a new joint wastewater treatment plant just outside of Chisholm with new pump stations in Chisholm and Buhl and a sewer line from Buhl to Chisholm. It also rehabilitates the existing wastewater pump station in Kinney. It is estimated to create five full-time permanent jobs as well as an estimated 137 construction jobs and will have a huge economic benefit to the area. The new treatment system will allow for the 169 Corridor to develop and for new and existing businesses to grow due to the added wastewater capacity.

"To be honest, our current wastewater system is dilapidated," stated Rep. Melin. "The additional $5 million that CIRSSD has received from the state will go a long way in helping to upgrade our system and ensure we are able to meet discharge standards. It is a wise investment that will greatly increase efficiency, create jobs and, most importantly, save ratepayers lots of money."

The projected average monthly sewer rates for households in Chisholm, Buhl and Kinney will remain economical when the new system is in place especially as compared to surrounding communities receiving state funding for wastewater improvement projects.

"This is a badly needed investment for all three communities. The plant will serve our area for many years to come," added Sen. Tomassoni. "This project is typical of the needs of many wastewater treatment systems across the state and to see it finally come to fruition is a testament to our local communities' foresight and dedication," he said.
